The "Brahman" community in UP supported Mayawati and returned her victorious with a thumping margin which, she, herself would not have imagined.Nobody was expecting that Brahmans, often at the receiving end from all and sundry castist parties, would support the Bahujan Samaj Party of Mayawati. After proving her critics wrong,Mayawati has extended her experiment in other poll- bound states.Gujrat,Maharashtra and Delhi are in her radar and she has already started fine tuning her strategy ,to the consternation of other leaders.
Traditionally, Brahmans by and large were Congress supporters by instinct, but the party began taking them for granted and kept ignoring them politically.BJP was the beneficiary at the cost of Congress but it also alienated them in its jest to broaden its political base.
Prior to the UP elections, Brahmans nowhere were a united community and their allegiance was not absolute towards any party. It is still not an absolute alignment yet,but there was certainly some inclination towards BSP in the U.P.Assembly election.
After Mandal and kamandal, it had become fashionable to deride upper castes, especially Brahmans.Numerically they appeared insignificant to those parties which were riding on the Mandal wave.Lalu Prasad Yadav,Mulayam Singh Yadav,Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati forged such caste combinations that rendered Congress and BJP ineffective in many states.BJP was able to attract forward castes and that enabled it to form a coalition government at the centre also.
Congress on the other hand lost all plot and became so desperate to keep afloat itself somehow that it foolishly supported the Lalu Prasad Government in Bihar, thus being equally responsible for taking Bihar into the Dark Ages. This act of the Congress completely alienated it from its voters and they switched to JDU and BJP.Nitish kumar of JDU,also belongs to the same caste category as Lalu. But,unlike Lalu, he never derided any community or caste.People respect him for that and are behind him en mass, so much so that even the BJP has faded from the political scene, even though it is a partner in the government. The central leadership of Congress did not listen to its own state leaders and eventually was wiped out from Bihar.
Mulayam Singh Yadav repeated the formula of Bihar in UP but unlike Lalu did not stop the functioning of the state machinery.Like Lalu, he also inherited the Muslim support after the Mosque demolition which he exploited for his personal advantage while the state lagged behind in all developmental parameters.
Caste combination coupled with complete Muslim support made these leaders invincible and they started indulging in arrogant politics.Lalu would openly abuse upper castes to keep his selected electorates in good humour. Now the wheel has turned full circle and the same leaders are making conciliatory gestures. The success of Mayawati has jolted them and now they realise that any candidate can be defeated by a single vote, so every voter, irrespective of his caste or creed, is equally important.
From the ongoing discussion at various online community forums ,it can be safely concluded that Brahmans have again gravitated towards the BJP,to teach lessons to the castiest parties.Congress is gaining support but it must be above petty politics and should never again be a party in destroying a state for non-existent political gains. But it never seems to learn otherwise how could a Known nuisance like Sadhu Yadav would have been accorded a star status by Sonia Gandhi herself.Hopefully Congress will realise its mistake and would desist from divisive politics.

Mayawati is destined to become the prime minister of India.Congress did not allow Babu Jagjeevan Ram to occupy the top post. But Mayawati would represent the growing aspirations of multitudes of this country which have been categorised as "Dalit".
Mayawati has tremendous hold over obstructionist elements in the bureaucracy. She will force them to perform. The only negative point to her is her association with too many tainted elements.
